It’s a question I hear all the time. Probably taken for granted by a lot of players, but definitely important. Problems with mobility, stamina, accuracy, tone, etc… can all stem from simply holding the little piece of plastic wrong.
First, I will say that this way is not necessarily the ONLY way to hold the pick. There are plenty of variations, and whatever works best is good.
For those of you that haven’t found your ‘best’ way, keep reading!
Be careful not to squeeze the pick too hard…just enough so that it doesn’t fall out of your hand.
If you start tensing your thumb, the rest of your hand or wrist will soon follow and you’ll be wasting energy.
There it is, as simple as I can explain it. Fire up ye olde drum machine or metronome and start ‘a practicing!
